PERU
TRUJILLO and CHICLAYO
|
Five hundred kilometers north of Lima and surrounded by sugar plantations which line the coast, lies the city of Trujillo (capital of La Libertad), home of one of Peru’s most famous dances ("Marinera", picture below) and site of the extensive mudbrick ruins of “Chan-Chan”, ancient capital of the Chimu Kingdom (AD. 1000-1476).
Covering some 13 minutes, Chan-Chan is composed of ten self-contained compounds or “barrios” each built by the reigning Chimu monarch to house his court and household, as well as storage facilities, a well, and on the king’s death, his mausoleum. Chiclayo is a city located in Lambayeque, three hours north from Trujillo.
There you can find the famous mausoleum of the Moche culture: The Tomb of Lord of Sipan. It was found in 1987 (it was announced in National Geographic) by the archaeologist Walter Alva and caused a great international stir.
The treasures unearthed at Sipan include objects of gold, silver, copper and other metals along with precious stones of finest quality, which demonstrate a mastery of metallurgy. The Moche treasures are exhibited at the Brunning Museum in Lambayeque.
To the north of Chiclayo, in the 26 colossal pyramids of the “Valley of the Pyramids”, lie other great monuments of the Moche culture currently being excavated: the complex of Tucume.
