Puno is a southeastern city located into the highlands or "altiplano", a windy plateau at a breathtaking 12000 meters above sea level.
This city is situated on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world and actually the crater of an extinct volcano.
The weather is cold and the atmosphere is thin, but the area is rich with spectacular landscapes and imposing archaeological ruins.
Puno was founded by Viceroy Conde de Lemos on November 4, 1688. Legend has it that Manco Capac, the first Inca, and Mama Ocllo, his sister-consort, rose from the waters of Lake Titicaca to found the Inca Empire.
The royal pair is said to be the ancestors of the Uros Indians, whose descendants now inhabit the famous floating islands of the lake, constructed of totora reeds that grow along the lakeshore.

-An hour boat ride takes you to three of the Floating Islands of the Uros, where you will need to be prepared for the hordes of small children that will come to you begging that you buy their miniature balsas or reed boats that are the reed boats particular to the Uros Indians.

CATAMARAN CROSSING OF LAKE TITICACA:
Pick-up from your hotel and drive to Copacabana. Visit the cathedral, home of the . Virgen Morena. . After lunch, you will board our catamaran-type cruise ship to visit the Island of the Sun and the Inca Water Spring reputed to be a source of eternal youth. You will also see the outstanding farming terraces built by the ancient Incas and still used by the inhabitants of the Island. Then, continue the crossing of Lake to Huataja, the Bolivian port. From here, transfer to your hotel in La Paz (47 minutes). Package includes lunch and transfers.
HYDROFOIL CROSSING OF LAKE TITICACA: Similar as above (Catamaran Crossing of Lake Titicaca), but faster navigation.
