The Amazon Jungle is located in Iquitos, the capital of Loreto, on the shores of Amazon River. The Amazon River is the second only to Egypt’s Nile in length in the world. Annually, the river discharges an estimated 20 to 25 % of all the water than runs off the land surfaces of the earth. Scientist estimate that there are 2500-3000 species of fish in the Amazon and an estimated 25000 different species of plants, potentially useful to people, grow in the Amazon Basin.
The surrounding rain forest and Iquitos have only two seasons: Low water season (Jun-Nov), that corresponds to the winter in the Southern Hemisphere. The difference in the water level is approximately 45 feet, although the climate itself changes very little; and High water season, where the river level rises due to melting ice and snow from the mountains and from the rainy season in the upper jungle.
High temperatures are about 88ºF and nighttime lows about 72ºF with a relatively humidity. It usually rains once a day, a good hard rain usually lasting about an hour. More walking excursions are offered during the Low water season and more boating excursions during the high water.
