LA PAZ

One of the most important cities of the country, although it is not the capital, is La Paz. La Paz, founded in 1548 by Alonso de Mendoza, has a population of 1 million people, is the home of the seat of the government and is the center of all industrial, cultural, banking and political services. Situated in a valley (or depression) in the Andes and at an altitude of 11 100 feet, the city is protected from the cold winds that blow from the higher levels (the altiplanos). The climate in La Paz is dry and cold with an average temperature between 50 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

  tango
Founded in 1548 by Alonso de Mendoza at the site of the Native American settlement called Chuquiago, the full name of the city was originally Nuestra Señora de La Paz (meaning Our Lady of Peace). The name commemorated the restoration of peace following the insurrection of Gonzalo Pizarro and fellow conquistadors two years earlier against Blasco Núñez Vela, the first viceroy of Peru. In 1825, after the decisive victory of the republicans at Ayacucho over the Spanish army in the course of the South American Wars of Independence, the city's full name was changed to La Paz de Ayacucho
